Five years ago today, Flickr announced its video feature. Some users weren’t happy.

(I’m actually kind of happy I made these posts now, as they’ve all been taken down. One of the users has now left Flickr entirely. I’ve been through Flickr so I know that users own their images, but on the other hand I like that these otherwise ephemeral protests escaped their creators clutches.)

In 2008, the German computer magazine c’t launched a competition to find the best program that could play Asteroids, the classic arcade game. It detailed the internals of the machine, and eventually chose from the entrants.

The winner, Helmut Buhler, was responsible for the video above. He realised that the random number generator at the core of the game was actually predictable, which means his code can fire shots before asteroids appear, or aim for both the asteroid and the smaller fragments that will spin off it.

If the sheer audacity of that doesn’t impress you, you may prefer the entry from Vladimir “Bleifuß” Panteleev, whose ship will scare the willies out of you as it slides at high speed just past vast rocks or the alien spaceship.

OSM 2008: A Year of Edits.

“An animation showing edits to the OpenStreetMap.org project during 2008. OpenStreetMap is a wiki-style map of the world and this animation displays a white flash each time a way is entered or updated. Some edits are a result of a physical local survey by a contributor with a GPS unit and taking notes, other edits are done remotely using aerial photography or out-of-copyright maps, and some are bulk imports of official data.”
