This is a photograph of Marilyn Monroe, then Mrs James Dougherty, June 26, 1945, working in the Radioplane Munitions Factory, a plant at the Van Nuys Airport in the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
The factory was owned, and the radioplane invented, by Reginald Denny, movie actor (he appeared in Anna Karenina (1935) and Hitchcock’s Rebecca (1940) among others) and Royal Flying Corps veteran.
This photograph of Monroe, one of a series by Army photographer David Conover, which led to her first screen test, shows her working at the Radioplane factory, assembling an OQ-2 Radioplane, “the first mass-produced UAV or drone in the United States.”

Wall Street Journal: Navy Catches the Drone Bug.

The U.S. Navy will take a big step into the drone age Tuesday when it catapults a batwing prototype of an unmanned plane off the deck of an aircraft carrier for the first time.

(Registration or Google-hopping required.)

I have something of an obsession with the image above, considering it the “canonical” image of a drone.

I had some suspicions about the Canon Drone, and research bears these out.

Good stuff from James Bridle (ht to Timo for the link).

Acrylic paintings of drones and servers by Daniel Rich, via the Peter Blum Gallery, and currently on show at the MFA Boston, reviewed here.

Aha. I didn’t find these on my trawl when I was posting Daniel Rich works earlier this week. Very good.

“ Blue Peter is running a new competition and we want YOU to get involved.
We need your help to come up with the name for an exciting new gadget that has been designed by the boffins at the BBC and the University of Southampton! The gadget is a remote control plane with a camera attached, which will be used to film large events from the sky. It may even be used to film parts of the Olympic Torch Relay this summer. ”

Remote-controlled Plane Design Competitioniamdanw:

Yeah, That’s Blue Peter getting kids involved in designing a drone.

For those lacking the rich British cultural heritage, here’s Wikipedia’s page on the venerable BBC show.

quote 22:33:50

A drone used by police on Merseyside crashed into the River Mersey during a routine training exercise.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), which was fitted with CCTV, apparently lost battery power while being flown by officers in Aigburth in February 2010.

Attempts to make an emergency landing failed and it crashed into the water.

Merseyside Police said it would not replace the £13,000 drone due to problems with its performance and the cost of training staff to use it.
