Political Landscapes of London at Views of the World (hat tip):
In my analysis of the 2008 election (data was kindly provided by Michael Thrasher of the University of Plymouth), I took a look beyond the two main parties and mapped the proportional distribution of votes for all political parties that had a candidate standing for election at the 2008 mayoral election. The geographical patterns that emerge are expression of the diverse demographics that compose the social landscape of the capital. In the map, each party’s individual shares are mapped onto a gridded population cartogram of London.
It is important to keep in mind that each of these patterns stands for considerably different total votes.

Transmission by Dan Holdsworth, via Architizer:

At first glance, British artist Dan Holdsworth’s work might depict any number of things: crumpled up paper napkins, a washed-out image from the surface of Mars, or even microscopic fractal patterns.

In fact, the images are 3D renderings of America’s most famous natural wonders. There’s the Grand Canyon, Mount Saint Helens, and the Great Salt Lake: by cloaking the models in a featureless white, Holdsworth shows us America’s “backyard” as a scaleless study in texture and detail.

Holdsworth worked from digital terrain models created by the United States Geological Survey Data to create the series, called Transmission: New Remote Earth Views.

There’s a lot more at the artist’s site, including more conventional in-landscape views. The series is being exhibited at the Brancolini Grimaldi gallery in London until 19 May 2012.

Places & Things - The Bird House:
Towards the end of the Victorian era, many of London’s city dwellers took advantage of new railway lines and became commuters by moving to burgeoning suburbs like East Ham, Ealing, Harringay or Hither Green. Landscapes of brick terraces, with their bay windows and back gardens, dominated architectural output around the turn of the 20th century. However, while these suburbs still constitute a significant proportion of London’s domestic architecture, they are largely ignored when we talk and think about housing in London today.

Emirates route map (via iamdanw, geotheory.org).
It’s interesting that this largely means the routes are straight lines, but there’s some grouping near Dubai, and the routes to South America have a discontinuity at the top of the map. You could avoid that, but only by splitting the continents instead. Still, fascinating choices.

Citymaps. Fast Co Design:

CityMaps is a view of New York City, Austin, and San Francisco through its logos alone. Rather than using satellite images, Street View, or legends for schools and restaurants, the map uses branding in its purest form — along with offers for all sorts of corresponding coupons — to help you discover somewhere you’d like to go.
