The Guardian’s state level election maps (for Mississippi, California, and New York) used height to show the population (making it clear why, for example, the inland parts of California didn’t stop the state going to Obama 60% to 40%).
I’m a little surprised they didn’t take the same approach to the electoral college map; that would have been interesting to see.

Four of the many, many different map overlays at the London Profiler site. Sadly the data is a little out of date (it looks like it hasn’t been updated since around 2008; I first saw it in 2009), but it’s still fun to play with for a while.
