The Guardian’s state level election maps (for Mississippi, California, and New York) used height to show the population (making it clear why, for example, the inland parts of California didn’t stop the state going to Obama 60% to 40%).

I’m a little surprised they didn’t take the same approach to the electoral college map; that would have been interesting to see.
