In addition to the six stamps commemorating the London Underground itself, there’s a series of four reproducing three classic posters each. As Creative Review quotes:

“There’s a wealth of beautiful posters to choose from [in the TFL archive] so it was difficult to choose just four in total,” says NB’s Nick Finney. “So, we played with multiple posters in a row across a longer format horizontal stamp. We wanted to evoke posters being displayed in the tunnel of the underground station (the modern train speeding past) and the windows of a carriage.”

A first day cover of Royal Mail stamps commemorating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Metropolitan line.
There’s more on the designs at the Creative Review blog, including this quote from Gareth Howat of Hat-Trick, the designers:

Our approach was to deliberately use a mix of photography, graphic art and illustration as it’s such a rich visual subject. The only one that was commissioned was the shot of Canary Wharf, which was shot by Paul Grundy, the rest are originals, some of which we had to enhance slightly.

quote 07:07:39
“ The postal affairs minister says he is “extremely confident” the Queen’s head would remain on postage stamps if the Royal Mail was sold to a foreign firm. ”

Ed Davey ‘confident’ on retaining Queen’s head on stamp, at BBC News.

My first reaction: is that really the most important thing about selling off (yet another) part of British infrastructure: whether or not the hereditary head of state’s symbol is still on an increasingly anachronistic bit of paper?

My second thought: knowing the way the Mail and Express can set an agenda, yes, it probably will seem to be.

Sigh.

UK Album Cover Stamps

Too bad we don’t have these in the US (and even if we did, the album selections wouldn’t be nearly as interesting). I’d love to stamp my correspondence with a “Power, Corruption, and Lies” or “Screamadelica” cover.

It’s interesting to note which of these work well at postage stamp size. Led Zep IV… well, it just doesn’t. Mind you, it looks like it’d be awful at a foot square too.

In the wake of the Creative Review blog posting the British Design Classics set of stamps, designed by HGV for the Royal Mail next year, the ffffound hive mind is in full gear. (Not that I’m immune to the tendency, but I tend to limit myself to just one image from the set. After all, I can always go back to the original post.)
Anyway, how could I not love those stamps? Mind you, I do wish they’d used one of Beck’s diagrams, or at least a recent TfL map that doesn’t look far too cluttered when turned into a stamp. Still, that’s full-blown rant material. Best step away from the post editor.
