Four RAF pilots have made history by becoming the first to be awarded their “wings” for flying unmanned aircraft.

The newly-qualified airmen will now pilot the Reaper MQ-9 aircraft in missions against the Taliban in Afghanistan, from an office on a US military base more than 7,000 miles away, near Las Vegas.

Although the RAF already has drone pilots, the four are the first to be trained specifically to fly unmanned aircraft.>

As the machines cannot currently been flown in the UK, under aviation laws, they trained in the USA, before graduating at Creech Air Force Base in Nevada, USA, last month.

One thing I’m very pleased I got around to doing before I left London was pay a visit to Dulwich. As the article says,

Soane built an entirely new brick gallery and mausoleum, which opened to the public in 1817 (using brick rather than marble kept down costs). The elegant structure, featuring a sequence of five impressive display rooms awash with daylight, is often cited as the first purpose-built art gallery in the world. It continues to inspire museum-designers today.

If you’re in or near London, the place is well worth a visit. Dulwich itself is interestingly nice, too; a sort of mirror image of Hampstead, in some ways.

Pomp and Circuitry: a Reuters photo I saw on the...

Pomp and Circuitry: a Reuters photo I saw on the Telegraph’s story, “Record 10m televisions sold in UK in 2009”.

The Google Maps alphabet UK: Q.
