“Replace fear of the unknown with curiosity”, the tag line for the U-Turn quadrennial of contemporary art in Copenhagen in 2008. I’m not sure why I chose to reblog this post this morning; usually it’s the sort of Tumblr-fodder I skip, but perhaps the new month gave me warm fuzzies or something.

“ The Web is teeming with code because code is text and text is cheap, portable and searchable. Copying is encouraged, not frowned upon. The neophyte programmer never has to learn alone. ”

“ You can’t actually copy the text, to paste it into your own private commonplace book, or email it to a friend, or blog about it. And of course there’s no way to link to it. What’s worse: the book in question is Penguin’s edition of Darwin’s Descent of Man, which is in the public domain. ”
Steven Berlin Johnson, in The Glass Box and the Commonplace Book, on manipulating text in iBooks on the iPad. Copied, natch, from Instapaper, saved as a on-device draft in Tumblr, then posted. Just to see if it could be done. (It can, but it’s not so slick if you’re offline.)

Interesting Neighbours

text 23:01:00

Yesterday was Interesting, in the best sense of the word. I’m not going to post about the talks or upload photos to Flickr because other people are doing that, more quickly and with more skill than I could.

No, I’m going to talk about the sign in the lobby. This isn’t quite as odd as it may seem, since it has turned up on Flickr a fair bit.

The Postal Mechanisation Study Circle was even mentioned during the day (I think by Russell, although I’ve forgotten now). Chris dug a bit and found their web site, along with an introductory page which talks about “a 200 page book BRITISH LETTER SORTING CODES covering a substantial range of the known data”.

I haven’t looked up any of the other groups yet, but I did notice that one of the captions and a comment on another of the photos worked towards the same joke, deployed best as “”I bet the atheist meet up people were really miffed when they found out the Bertrand Russell room was already booked.”

Some of the groups were still meeting even after Interesting had left.

I can’t even figure out which of the multiple acryonyms that Google returns for “ACEM” that’s likely to be.

Anyway, I thought that was mildly interesting. Possibly.

quote 10:48:30
“ For things that matter, written words are unambiguously better than speech. To start with, anything that matters isn’t just written, it’s usually rewritten repeatedly (and more important, condensed). Plus, it has hyperlinks. Plus, it’s smaller and cheaper to ship around. Plus, it’s searchable. Plus, it works on more devices. ”
